OpenAI Renames Data Centers 'AI Compute Campuses' Amid Backlash

OpenAI is replacing the term data center with «AI compute campuses» as public concern grows over the power, water and land used by AI facilities.

OpenAI is changing how it describes its large AI data centers, adopting the term «AI compute campuses». A company spokesperson confirmed the shift, which the company says better reflects the scope and economic role of these facilities.

The new name arrives as criticism of data center expansion grows in the United States over heavy electricity use, water consumption and land requirements. A recent Pew Research survey found that 54% of Americans believe AI data centers harm the environment.

Why the new label

OpenAI wants to stress that these sites are more than rooms of servers and storage. They are full projects that involve energy infrastructure, large-scale land development and jobs for specialists and technical workers. The company also wants to highlight the economic benefits for surrounding communities and signal that it intends to work with residents and local authorities, rather than be seen as a builder of resource-hungry buildings.

Politics and industry pressure

The timing coincides with the US midterm elections on 3 November 2026, with AI and its environmental and economic effects increasingly part of political debate. Chris Lehane, OpenAI's chief global affairs officer, has described the midterms as a preview of the 2028 presidential race, where he expects AI to become a leading issue. He said community scrutiny of such projects is healthy, that local communities should receive fair value for hosting them, and that tech companies must take responsibility for their impact. He also floated ideas such as global AI standards and limits on the pace of AI development and use.

OpenAI is not alone. Amazon, Meta and Microsoft face growing opposition to their data center plans. Some have announced funding for schools and community projects near their sites, and Amazon and Microsoft have said they will move away from confidential non-disclosure agreements in talks with local governments, in a bid for more transparency.

The rebrand shows that competition in AI now extends beyond building the most advanced models to winning the trust of communities that bear part of the environmental and economic cost. Whether a change of terminology can ease real concerns about resource consumption remains an open question.
