iPhone Jailbreak Bypasses Lockdown Mode and Survives iOS Update

Hacker team Calif has shown a jailbreak on an iPhone 18 Pro with Lockdown Mode enabled, and it stayed in place after an update to iOS 27.2.

Hacker team Calif has demonstrated a jailbreak that works on an iPhone with Lockdown Mode switched on and appears to survive an iOS update. The demonstration comes just over a week after the group jailbroke an iPhone Duo on launch day.

In a video shared on November 3, Calif shows a jailbroken iPhone 18 Pro with Lockdown Mode enabled. iOS 27.2 is then installed, and the jailbreak remains in place afterward. It is not clear whether the exploit could be installed on a device that is already running iOS 27.2.

What Lockdown Mode is meant to do

Apple describes Lockdown Mode as "extreme protection" for people who might be targeted by sophisticated mercenary spyware. To shrink the attack surface, it disables a long list of features. It blocks most message attachment types, limits web technologies, blocks FaceTime calls from unfamiliar callers, disables invites for Apple services and removes location information from photos.

Calif summed up the demonstration in a post on X: "Lockdown Mode helps, until it doesn't."

Why it matters

Earlier this year, Apple told TechCrunch that it was not aware of any successful mercenary spyware attacks against an iPhone in Lockdown Mode. A working jailbreak on a protected device does not prove that such attacks have happened, but it shows that the feature can be bypassed by a skilled team.

For most users the practical risk is limited. Calif previously said it was disclosing the vulnerabilities to Apple and did not plan to release a jailbreak tool for end users. That means the techniques are not available as a consumer tool for now.

What remains open is how quickly Apple can fix the underlying flaws, and whether the persistence across the iOS 27.2 update points to a weakness that survives routine software updates.
