iPhone Duo Teardown: iFixit Gives Apple's Foldable 5/10 for Repair
iFixit's teardown of the iPhone Duo scores it 5/10 for repairability, the best for any foldable so far, and offers theories on the cracked hinges and screens.

iFixit has opened up the iPhone Duo and given Apple's first foldable a repairability score of 5 out of 10. That isn't high in absolute terms, but it is the best result the site has awarded a foldable phone to date.
How Apple hides the crease
The teardown points to several tricks used to make the fold less visible. The inner screen has a matte nano-texture cover, which improves readability in bright sunlight and also helps mask the crease by scattering reflections. Under a microscope, iFixit also found oval-shaped subpixels arranged at various angles. The site believes these are meant to reduce artifacts and further hide the line down the middle of the display.
The nano-texture outer layer is relatively easy to replace without removing the OLED panel beneath it. Repairing the display itself is another matter: as with other foldables, iFixit describes it as an expensive nightmare.
iFixit also tested dust resistance with glow dust. Some got into the USB-C port, speaker grilles and hinge, leaving the hinge a bit crunchy. Still, noticeably less reached the inside of the phone than with the Z Fold8 or Pixel 11 Pro Fold.
Possible cause of cracked hinges and screens
Some owners have reported damaged screens and an audible crack from the hinge. iFixit has theories. The Duo's hinge is highly complex, and the site suspects part of it sometimes doesn't descend properly. An accordion cable passes over that exact spot, close to the edge of the battery. That could concentrate pressure and lead to the crack and the broken screens some users describe.
These are hypotheses from a teardown, not confirmed findings. Apple did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
For buyers, the score suggests the Duo is somewhat friendlier to repair than rival foldables, particularly for outer-layer damage. The costly inner display and the hinge behavior remain the main concerns to watch.
