Hackers Hit Store Refrigerators in Poland, Staff Save Food

Hackers attacked internet-connected refrigeration at a small Polish grocery and a food distributor. Staff noticed rising temperatures and moved the food in time.

Hackers have attacked commercial refrigeration systems in Poland. The victims reportedly include a small grocery store and a food distributor, and the incident took place on Monday.

Details remain scarce. It is not clear which companies were affected or at what time the attack was carried out. What is known is that employees noticed temperatures inside the refrigerators climbing and reacted quickly. They moved the food to other cooling units that the attackers had not taken control of, so the stock was saved.

Warnings after the French attacks

After similar attacks in France in early October, the research institute NASK checked which networks in Poland had refrigerators connected to the internet. It found 140 such cases and advised the owners to disconnect the cooling equipment from the network. Not everyone followed that advice.

Marcin Dudek, head of CERT Polska, said that about 70 devices responsible for cooling systems in this type of facility are currently reachable from the internet. That is roughly half the number found in the initial check.

Why it matters

The number of exposed devices is now small, so the consequences of another attack in Poland would be minor, even if it hit every connected unit in the country and NASK's warnings were ignored entirely.

The issue is not monitoring itself. There is nothing wrong with checking a refrigerator's parameters over the network. The real risk is remote control: if outsiders can change settings on cooling equipment, they can spoil stock and cause losses. Shops and distributors that still expose such systems to the internet should cut that access, keeping read-only monitoring if they need it.
