FritzOS 8.50 and 8.51 roll out to more Fritzbox routers
Fritz is releasing the final FritzOS 8.50 to a growing list of routers. It brings a DNS filter, automatic prioritization and new smart home routines.

Fritz is rolling out the final version of FritzOS 8.50 to a steadily growing number of Fritzbox routers. The beta phase has ended for the first devices, and the manufacturer is releasing the update model by model.
Several devices receive FritzOS 8.51 directly. According to the report, this changes nothing about the feature set, and Fritz points to the FritzOS 8.50 overview page in its announcements on X. The models currently cleared for the update are the Fritzbox DSL/Fiber 7-90, Fritzbox 6670 Cable and Fritzbox 5690 XGS, plus the Fritz Repeater 6000, all of them directly on 8.51.
What the update brings
The biggest addition is a DNS filter that blocks ads on many devices in the home network, including smartphones, tablets and connected smart TVs. In combination with FritzOS 8.50, the Myfritz app also gets a Smart Check. It shows the status of the Fritzbox and the whole network and offers recommendations for improving the home network.
Fritz also adds automatic prioritization that puts real-time connections such as video calls ahead of other traffic. If other connections load the line, the bandwidth needed for meetings is freed up. Smart home users get predefined routines, for example for leaving the house. Custom routines can now have several triggers, and geofencing has been improved.
Repeater gets stability fixes
The Fritz Repeater 6000 is the first Wi-Fi extender among the update candidates. Unlike the routers, it reportedly gets no new features. The update is said to focus on stability, lower memory use, better cooperation with Amazon devices and more stable Wi-Fi when connection settings change.
Fritz is expected to release more models in the coming weeks and months. Owners who do not want to wait can install the lab version FritzOS 8.40 on some models, which includes early FritzOS 8.50 features. These are test versions, though, and can still cause problems.
