ChatGPT Passes 1 Billion Weekly Users, Outpacing Social Media

ChatGPT reached 100 million users in two months and over 1 billion weekly users in under four years, growing faster than any social network, though rivals are closing in.

ChatGPT has grown faster than any social network in history. According to OpenAI, it passed 1 billion weekly users in August and reached 1.2 billion by the end of September, less than four years after its launch on 30 November 2022.

The early pace was already a record. The chatbot hit 100 million users in roughly two months, well ahead of Instagram and Facebook. Its mobile app is also scaling: Sensor Tower estimates it topped 1 billion monthly users in May.

A chart that favors social networks

The comparison comes from data journalist Samuel Bennett, who built it from company figures, IPO documents and third-party estimates from Sensor Tower and Similarweb. Each product is plotted from its launch date, so early months of veterans like Facebook can be set against newcomers.

The comparison is not perfectly even: ChatGPT's figures are weekly users, while the others are monthly or self-reported active users. That works against ChatGPT, yet its growth curve is still steeper than any other. TikTok was unbeatable in its first two years, but ChatGPT overtakes it. Twitter never reached comparable scale and shows signs of stagnation.

The numbers also help OpenAI's case for investors, particularly ahead of a possible stock market listing. Reaching a billion users without an existing social network behind it can help justify the $110 billion raised in the company's February funding round.

Rivals are catching up

ChatGPT's lead is narrowing. Sensor Tower data show its share of generative AI usage fell below 50% for the first time, to 46.4% at the end of May. ChatGPT needed 44 months to reach 1 billion weekly users. Meta AI hit 1 billion users in month 20 and Gemini around month 41, while Grok and Claude remain far behind. Those rivals' figures are monthly, so they are not directly comparable.

Big tech has a distribution edge: Google and Meta can put their assistants in front of users through existing products, with WhatsApp the clearest example. Much of their position is therefore inherited, regardless of how their products perform.
