ChatGPT Becomes OpenAI's Largest Market in India as Users Double

India has become ChatGPT's largest market anywhere in the world, after OpenAI's user base in the country doubled. The milestone puts India ahead of every other market for the chatbot and shows how quickly generative AI has spread among Indian consumers.

For OpenAI, the shift matters because it ties the growth of its flagship product ever more closely to one of the world's biggest internet populations. How the company serves, prices and localises ChatGPT in India is likely to carry more weight in its overall strategy.

Rapido's gross order value quadruples

In the same round-up of Indian tech news, ride-hailing company Rapido stood out with gross order value (GOV) that has quadrupled. The figures behind the business point to a company operating at considerable scale.

Rapido handles around 8.3 million daily orders across its services, with ride-hailing accounting for more than 95% of them. Its monthly active users grew 27% between January and October this year.

The company has also widened its footprint sharply, expanding to nearly 500 cities from around 100 a few years ago. Industry executives estimate its market share at 60% across bikes, auto rickshaws and four-wheeler cabs.

Investors have backed that momentum. Rapido raised $240 million in May at a valuation of $3 billion.

Together, the two stories show where Indian consumer technology is gaining ground: AI assistants that draw users in huge numbers, and mobility platforms that have scaled far beyond the largest metros. Both rely on a mobile-first audience that is adopting digital services faster than many established markets.
