Best City E-Bikes 2026: Mapfour Roam Wins Test, Engwe P275 SE Value Pick
After testing around 60 city e-bikes, the Mapfour Roam takes the top spot. The Engwe P275 SE is the value winner at 899 euros, and Riese & Müller leads on technology.

After testing roughly 60 city e-bikes, the Mapfour Roam has come out on top in a ranking of the ten best pedelecs for urban riding. The list focuses on equipment and value for money, and it also covers urban and trekking models suited to regular road use.
The Roam combines a Mivice mid-mounted motor with 100 Nm and a torque sensor, a carbon belt and an enclosed Nexus 5 hub gearbox. It also has full suspension with a four-bar rear linkage, GPS tracking through its own mobile module and a 720 Wh battery that charges in 2.5 hours. Range is 70 to 90 km. The drawbacks are a cramped cockpit and a weight of 34 kg. It costs 2,799 euros from Mapfour.
Technology and value winners
The technology winner is the Riese & Müller Charger 4 GT. Its fourth-generation Bosch Performance Line CX motor delivers 85 Nm, handles gradients above 20 percent in testing and can be updated via an app. Bosch ABS 2.0 and a range extender are available at extra cost. As the Touring Core it costs 3,700 euros new; the tested Touring variant is available used from Rebike from 2,799 euros.
The value winner is the Engwe P275 SE, a low-step model with a rear motor and torque sensor that the testers found quiet and natural. It has hydraulic disc brakes and a rack rated for 25 kg. The 468 Wh battery covers 40 to 70 km and the bike weighs 24.4 kg. Riders taller than about 185 cm will find it uncomfortable. With the code TECHSTAGE50 it costs 899 euros. The rest of the top ten includes the Ado Air 30 Ultra and Pro, Urtopia Carbon 1 ST, Kalkhoff Endeavour 7.B Move+, Engwe N1 Pro and Evercross EK25.
What the rules require
To be used legally in German cities, an e-bike must meet the StVZO road traffic regulations, including certified lighting, reflectors and a bell. It must also qualify as a pedelec: any throttle may only assist up to 6 km/h as a push aid, and the motor, limited to 250 W nominal power, may assist only up to 25 km/h while pedalling.
Ranking criteria were ride quality, motor and sensors, StVZO equipment, build quality and price.
