Apple Strikes Deal for Ascend.io, an AI Data Engineering Startup
Apple has agreed a deal with Ascend.io, a data engineering platform built on AI agents, structured largely as a talent deal with IP licensing, an EU filing shows.

Apple has agreed a deal with Ascend.io, a company that builds data engineering tools powered by AI agents, in a fresh move to strengthen its artificial intelligence and data processing capabilities.
The agreement surfaced in the latest update to the list of acquisitions published on the European Union's official website. The entry names Ascension Labs, Inc., known as Ascend.io, and appears under the Digital Markets Act (DMA), which requires large gatekeeper companies to disclose acquisitions above a certain size.
A talent deal rather than a full takeover
According to the details, this is not a conventional acquisition. It follows the model of so-called acqui-hire deals: Apple gets the right to make job offers to and hire a number of the company's employees. It also receives a non-exclusive licence to the startup's intellectual property, and the agreement allows for the transfer of some patents to Apple.
What Ascend.io does
Ascend.io describes itself as the first data engineering platform that uses AI agents. These agents handle routine data engineering tasks automatically, reducing the workload for human teams.
Founded in 2015, the company first focused on tools that help data engineers manage the collection, transformation and organisation of data. It later moved to systems in which AI agents work alongside specialist teams across the stages of data engineering.
Ascend.io updated its website as the deal was announced. It said it had spent the past ten years making data engineering easier, offering data pipeline technology and a unified platform for ingesting, transforming and orchestrating data, before moving to agent-based data engineering.
Part of a broader pattern
The deal is one of several investments and acquisitions Apple has made to build up its technical capabilities. Earlier this month, the company struck an agreement with an AI startup that lets musicians reprocess and modify music recordings.
Neither the financial terms nor the number of employees joining Apple were disclosed in the available material.
