Android Studio Rabbit 2 opens up to Claude, GPT and other AIs

At its Dev Summit, Google unveiled Android Studio Rabbit 2. The IDE adds agentic features and, notably, lets developers use AI models from outside Google.

Google has released Android Studio Rabbit 2 at its Dev Summit, and the update breaks with a long-standing habit: the development environment no longer ties developers exclusively to Google's own AI. Models from other providers, including Anthropic's Claude and OpenAI's GPT, can now be used inside the IDE.

Agentic features and an open model choice

According to the announcement, Rabbit 2 also brings a range of new agentic functions. Rather than only completing lines of code or answering questions in a chat window, such agents are designed to take on larger development tasks with more autonomy. Google has not been specific in the material available so far about every individual feature, so the exact scope will become clearer as developers try the release.

The more striking change is the openness toward competitors. Until now, AI assistance in Android Studio was closely linked to Google's Gemini models. Allowing non-Google AIs means developers can pick the model that fits their project, their budget or their company's policies, instead of changing tools to get access to a preferred assistant.

Why it matters

Many teams already use Claude, GPT or other models in their daily work, often through separate editors or plugins. Bringing them into the official Android IDE reduces friction and acknowledges how fragmented the AI tooling landscape has become. For Google, it is a pragmatic move: keeping developers inside Android Studio matters more than insisting on its own model.

For Android developers, the practical questions now are how well the third-party models integrate with the new agent functions, and how data handling and costs are managed when external providers are connected. Details on availability and setup are expected to follow with the release itself.
