Amazon Rebrands Kindle Unlimited as Kindle+, Adds AI Audiobooks

Amazon has renamed Kindle Unlimited to Kindle+, keeping the $12 monthly price while adding more audiobooks, including titles narrated by AI through Virtual Voice.

Amazon has rebranded its Kindle Unlimited subscription as Kindle+. The price stays at $12 a month, but the service now leans harder on audiobooks, including titles narrated by AI rather than human voice actors.

Kindle+ is still separate from Prime, and subscribers can still borrow up to 20 titles at once from the eligible catalog. Amazon describes the update as a rebrand rather than a new product, so the core reading experience remains largely unchanged.

More audiobooks, some read by AI

The main change is a larger audiobook selection. Authors can now make more eligible audiobooks available in Kindle+, and subscribers can pick from traditionally narrated titles as well as those produced with Virtual Voice, Amazon's AI narration service. Amazon says the idea is to let readers continue an ebook by listening after they put down their Kindle.

Virtual Voice is offered free to authors in Kindle Direct Publishing (KDP). That lowers the barrier to creating an audiobook, which could bring more titles to the catalog and help authors reach a wider audience. Authors enrolled in Kindle+ are paid for pages read rather than per download, with earnings depending on the monthly payout rate and total pages read.

What it means for listeners and narrators

The shift raises questions about the human side of audiobooks. When a free AI narrator is available, some self-published authors may skip hiring a professional, which could reduce work for narrators, some of whom have loyal followings. Listening on Kindle is not new: some Kindle Unlimited ebooks already came with professionally narrated audiobooks, and accessibility tools such as Assistive Reader and VoiceView have long read text aloud.

For listeners who want human-narrated or dramatized productions, Audible and other services remain the better fit, as does Libby through a local library. Kindle+ users, meanwhile, get more listening options at the same price, with the quality and style of narration depending on which title they choose.
