Zcash NU7 goes live on mainnet, cutting block time threefold

Zcash's NU7 network upgrade is live on mainnet, shortening block time threefold and activating a mechanism that removes 60% of each block's fees from circulation.

Zcash's major network upgrade, NU7, has gone live on mainnet. The update cuts the network's block time by a factor of three, meaning blocks are produced considerably faster than before.

NU7 also switches on the Network Sustainability Mechanism. Under this mechanism, 60% of the transaction fees in each block are removed from circulation rather than passed on in full, a change to how fee revenue is handled on the network.

Why it matters

Shorter block times generally mean transactions can be included in blocks sooner, which can make the network feel more responsive to users and applications. The fee mechanism, meanwhile, ties everyday network activity to the supply of ZEC by taking a share of fees out of circulation with every block.

Together, the two changes make NU7 one of the more consequential upgrades to the privacy-focused blockchain in recent times, touching both performance and token economics.

What comes next

With the upgrade active on mainnet, attention turns to how the faster blocks and the fee removal play out in practice. Wallets, exchanges and other services that integrate with Zcash will be running on the new rules from here on.
