Windows 11 27H2 to bring deep 64-bit overhaul in 2027, not Windows 12

Microsoft is reportedly preparing Windows 11 27H2 as a full overhaul of the system base, with 64-bit performance gains and a visual refresh, rather than Windows 12.

Microsoft is said to be planning Windows 11 27H2 as one of its most ambitious updates yet, reworking the foundations of the operating system instead of launching Windows 12. According to the reports, the release will focus on 64-bit performance and replace significant parts of the system base.

That sets it apart from 25H2 and 26H2, which arrived as small enablement packages that switched on features already present in the system. 27H2 would go further, allowing deeper changes to Windows' internal architecture and day-to-day speed. Its scale is expected to be close to that of 24H2.

Performance takes center stage

Engineers have made performance a core pillar. Microsoft recently said Windows 11 runs faster on PCs with 8 GB of RAM than it did in early 2026, thanks to memory-management optimizations that reduce how often data is pushed to disk when RAM is under pressure. The company is expected to keep tuning multitasking, especially on modest hardware.

27H2 could also add support for Intel APX, an instruction set that speeds up 64-bit applications. If it happens, it would be one of the update's headline features, letting apps run faster in a range of scenarios.

New look and modern dialogs

The update is also expected to refresh Windows 11's visual identity. The Bloom wallpaper that has shipped since launch would give way to several designs, with variants for home and business PCs, gamers, content creators and others.

Microsoft may also bundle changes that Insider builds have tested for months. In June, the company's design chief said on X that the oldest dialog boxes are being rewritten in WinUI 3, Windows 11's modern interface framework. Some, such as the file-copy dialog, are finished internally, while others still rely on legacy technologies like Win32. Engineers must first confirm that the WinUI 3 versions are as fast as the originals.

Microsoft is not yet ready to announce Windows 12. It first wants a solid base and to fix the problems the current version carries. For now, 27H2 is the next big step, and its plans remain rumors until the company confirms them.
