Ryohin Keikaku has taken the Muji online store offline and disabled most of the MUJI app to strengthen security after a possible user data leak.

Ryohin Keikaku, the company behind Muji, announced on November 6 that it has temporarily suspended the Muji online store to strengthen security. The retailer expects to resume service within one to two days.

According to the company, every service and function on the online store website is currently unavailable. The official MUJI app is also largely disabled: all features are stopped except the display of the membership barcode in MUJI Members.

Third update on a possible data leak

The announcement is the third report on the possible leak of user information from the MUJI app, following earlier disclosures on October 30 and November 4. Ryohin Keikaku says it put the protection of user information first and decided to pause the services so it can carry out further security measures.

The earlier reports put the scale of the October 30 incident at 27.26 million records of personal information. The November 4 update said the problem also affected the online store and that some card information was involved as well.

What it means for customers

For shoppers, the practical effect is that online orders and most app functions are unavailable until the company brings the services back. In-store members can still show their membership barcode through the app, since that single function remains active.

The company has given a target of one to two days for restoring the online store, but has not provided further details in this announcement about the technical measures it is taking. Customers who use the app or online store should expect further notices from Ryohin Keikaku as the investigation and restoration work continue.
