IndiaAI Mission's Three Indigenous AI Models Target Offline and Secure Use

Three homegrown AI models launched under the IndiaAI Mission are being developed for offline use on mobile phones and secure deployment in defence, cybersecurity and banking.

Three indigenous artificial intelligence models launched under the Indian government's IndiaAI Mission are being developed for applications that range from offline access on mobile phones to secure use in critical sectors such as defence, cybersecurity and banking.

The two goals address very different problems. Offline access on handsets points to models designed to work without a constant internet connection, a requirement that matters wherever connectivity is patchy or data is costly. Putting AI directly on a phone also keeps more of the interaction on the device itself.

Security-sensitive sectors in focus

The second track targets defence, cybersecurity and banking. These are fields where data is highly sensitive and where organisations typically want tight control over how a model is built, hosted and used. A domestically developed model gives institutions in those sectors a route to adopt AI under national oversight rather than depending entirely on foreign systems.

The approach also shows how the IndiaAI Mission is being used: not only to showcase general-purpose models, but to build systems matched to specific needs, from consumer devices to institutions where reliability and confidentiality come first.

What comes next

The models are still being developed. Details such as release schedules, model sizes and performance benchmarks have not been disclosed. Those figures will determine how the models compare with established global systems and how quickly developers, banks and public agencies can start building on them.

For now, the announcement signals that India's public AI programme is moving from launch to targeted deployment, with offline mobile use and high-security environments as its first stated priorities.
