A network failure disrupted departure procedures for 13 airlines at Incheon International Airport on 30 October, according to Incheon International Airport Corporation. The fault began around 4:30 a.m. in the network that links airline ticketing systems.

Eight airlines at Terminal 1 and five at Terminal 2 saw intermittent connection drops, which delayed ticketing and boarding procedures. Three Terminal 1 carriers were found to have had ticketing operations halted. At some check-in counters, processing was slow, and passengers about to depart faced inconvenience.

Chinese carriers hit hardest

By the afternoon, general ticketing at China Southern Airlines, China Eastern Airlines and Air China had effectively stopped.

The airport operator suspects instability in the global communications network of ARINC, a US aviation communications service used by the airlines, and has been reviewing how to respond. However, the specific cause of the fault and the time when services will return to normal have not been confirmed.

No flight delays so far

An airport corporation official said the outage had not caused any flight departure delays as far as the company could tell, and that it would continue to check conditions on site.

The incident shows how dependent airport operations are on shared communications infrastructure. When a single provider's network becomes unstable, carriers at different terminals can be affected at once, even if aircraft schedules remain intact. Passengers on the affected airlines may face longer waits at the counters until the connection is restored.
