Google offers voluntary departures in France as AI spending soars

Google has extended its voluntary departure plan to several countries, including France, offering severance packages to some staff while it spends heavily on AI.

Google has extended its voluntary departure programme to several countries, including France. The company confirmed that since June 2026 it has offered departures with financial compensation to some employees in France, Germany, Switzerland, Canada and Japan.

The scheme is voluntary: affected staff are offered a package to leave rather than being dismissed. The company has not detailed, in the material available, how many employees were approached or what the compensation amounts are.

A backdrop of massive AI investment

The move comes as Google, like other big tech groups, is committing very large sums to artificial intelligence. Such spending puts pressure on cost structures elsewhere in the business, and voluntary departure offers are one way of adjusting headcount without launching formal layoffs.

For employees in the countries concerned, the offer adds to a growing sense that even the most profitable technology groups are reshaping their workforces around AI priorities. In France and Germany, where labour law and employee representation weigh heavily on restructuring, voluntary schemes are often a preferred route.

What to watch

Key open questions are the size of the programme, which teams are targeted and whether further countries will be added to the list. Google has so far confirmed only the five countries and the June 2026 start of the offers.
