Google Gemini Adds Personal Avatars With Your Face and Voice

Google has launched Personal Avatars in the Gemini app, letting adults create AI images and videos that use their own face and voice and share them with others.

Google has introduced Personal Avatars in its Gemini app, a feature that lets users generate AI images and videos featuring their own face and voice. Avatars can also be shared with friends, family and colleagues, who can then use them to create their own content.

The feature relies on the Nano Banana model for image generation and Gemini Omni for video. Users can combine their avatar with those of other people who have shared theirs with them. Google says owners keep control over who may use an avatar, for how long, and can revoke access at any time.

How to set one up

Creating an avatar means recording your face and voice. Users start the process on a computer, scan a QR code to continue on a phone or tablet, and then record, keeping the face clearly visible throughout. Google recommends a quiet place with good lighting.

Sharing and deletion

Avatars are shared through email invitations sent to Gmail addresses. Recipients must accept the invitation before they can use the avatar. From Gemini settings, the owner can set an expiry date or cancel sharing entirely. Once sharing is revoked, the other person can no longer create new content with the avatar, but anything already made remains available.

Deleting an avatar is done in Google account settings and removes the avatar image and the associated voice recordings. Anyone who wants to use the feature again must record a new avatar. Previously created or published images and videos are not deleted.

Availability

The feature is open to users aged 18 and over with a personal Google account. For now it supports English only and is not available in the United Kingdom, the European Economic Area or Switzerland. Creating videos with avatars requires a subscription to one of the Google AI plans.
