China's Tech Giants Offer 1 Million Yuan for AI Deployment Engineers
ByteDance, Tencent and Alibaba are offering up to 1 million yuan a year (about €134,000) for forward-deployed engineers, a role Anthropic and OpenAI also want.

Chinese tech giants including ByteDance, Tencent and Alibaba are offering salaries of around 1 million yuan a year (roughly €134,000) for a very specific profile: the forward-deployed engineer, or FDE. These engineers talk to customers to understand their problem, choose the right AI tools and implement the solution.
The pay stands out against official data. According to China's National Bureau of Statistics, IT technical professionals at mid-sized and larger Chinese companies earned an average of 275,504 yuan in 2025, while the sector's overall staff averaged 106,080 yuan. Tencent has posted FDE ads for its AI division offering 35,000 to 65,000 yuan a month over 15 payments, up to 975,000 yuan a year. ByteDance lists 35,000 to 70,000 yuan, also with 15 payments.
Demand is surging
A report from Maimai, a Chinese professional network, shows searches for the profile grew 1,523% in the first seven months of the year compared with the same period of 2025, making it the fastest-growing AI technical role. China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology has also issued a statement encouraging companies to build FDE teams.
Training is following. Shanghai is reportedly considering linking FDE training to vocational degrees and postgraduate courses, and Tencent has launched what it calls the industry's first FDE certification.
Why it matters
The role targets a persistent problem: turning AI from lab demos into business results. Apollo Global Management recently warned that, outside the tech sector, AI has yet to deliver clear returns or productivity gains. MIT's June 2025 "The GenAI Divide" report found only 5% of custom enterprise AI tools reach production, with most pilots showing no measurable impact on profits. Its lead author pointed to a learning gap and poor integration into companies, which is the gap FDEs are meant to close.
The trend is global. The role is said to have originated at Palantir, and US job ads for forward-deployed engineers have grown 800% since 2025, according to Financial Times data. Google and OpenAI are now hiring for it, and Anthropic has announced a $100 million investment to train 10,000 such engineers by the end of 2027.
