Canva Brush: New AI Model Edits Existing Designs by Text Prompt

Canva has launched Canva Brush, an in-house AI model that edits existing designs from text commands while keeping untouched elements intact. It is open to Canva Pro users.

Canva has launched Canva Brush, a new AI model that lets users modify and improve designs they already have using plain text commands, while preserving the elements they do not want changed.

The model was built by Canva's internal research team and relies on a vision-language architecture. That lets the AI understand a design's components and layout, then apply the requested edits precisely, instead of generating an entirely new image each time.

Targeted edits, consistent look

According to the company, Brush can change specific parts of a design while leaving text, images, colors, spacing and formatting elsewhere untouched. Users can ask it to rewrite a single line or to redesign several slides in a full presentation, with the visual identity and consistency across pages maintained.

Canva showed one example: a request for a three-page presentation for a bakery in an Art Nouveau style. The model plans the content, writes the copy, selects and arranges images, and keeps a unified look.

Under the hood, the system uses AI agents that write code to apply changes to design elements, then inspect the result to decide whether further refinement is needed. Everything the model creates remains editable, so users can adjust text, images, colors and formatting manually afterward.

Speed and cost

Canva's own tests indicate Brush is up to 69% faster at editing tasks than its previous design agent and cuts the cost of each edit by 46%. Internal evaluations also showed quality equal to or better than the earlier system in most editing tasks, with particularly strong results when changing visual styles and adapting designs to different sizes and formats.

Canva Brush has been available since October 30 within Canva AI tools for Canva Pro subscribers, for supported design tasks. Users can open an existing design in the Canva editor, or attach one through Canva AI, then choose Brush from the dropdown menu and type their instructions.
