Nine in ten Russians keep items at home they haven't used for over a year, worth 24,000 rubles on average, an Avito survey shows. Online platforms lead resale.

Nine out of ten Russians keep at home things they have not used for more than a year, according to a survey by Avito. The average estimated value of these unneeded belongings is 24,000 rubles, and 55% of respondents say they have sold items more than once.
How much clutter is there
On average, respondents keep about ten unused items. 38% counted fewer than five, while 16% have more than 20. Age matters: among 18–24-year-olds, 52% hold fewer than five such items, whereas 19% of those aged 45–64 reported more than 20.
Clothing, shoes and bags make up the bulk of the clutter, named by 73% of participants. Gender differences are visible: women more often keep dishes and household goods (44% versus 34% for men), jewelry (30% versus 12%), electronics and appliances (36% versus 25%) and sports and hobby gear (20% versus 15%).
Why people hold on
The main reason is the hope that an item will come in handy, cited by 57%. Another 38% said they feel sorry to throw things away. 27% would like to sell but cannot find the time, and 16% keep things for family or other emotional reasons.
Almost half of respondents (47%) believe all their unneeded items together are worth no more than 15,000 rubles; 15% put the total between 15,000 and 30,000 rubles.
Online resale leads
55% of Russians have repeatedly sold things they stopped using. The most active group is aged 25–44, at 63%. Another 19% have never sold anything but plan to try. Among those who have sold, 72% used online classifieds platforms; social networks and neighborhood chats were also named as channels.
