Martorell Halts ID. Polo and Cupra Raval Output on Cell Shortage

Volkswagen's Martorell plant paused ID. Polo and Cupra Raval output for lack of PowerCo cells, while the Tesla Model Y topped Green NCAP's carbon ranking.

The Martorell factory in Spain suspended production of the Volkswagen ID. Polo and the Cupra Raval from 23 to 26 October 2026. The cause was a shortage of battery cells supplied by PowerCo, not weak demand.

Orders are strong: the Cupra Raval has around 51,000 and the ID. Polo close to 40,000. That volume is putting heavy pressure on the ramp-up. The cell shortage has become a bottleneck across Europe, and Tesla, Stellantis and Renault all acknowledge that battery supply currently limits their output.

Model Y posts best carbon score

In other electric-vehicle news this week, the Tesla Model Y Propulsion earned the best carbon footprint Green NCAP has ever published: 95 g of CO₂ equivalent per kilometre over its full life cycle. For the first time, the assessment used manufacturing data supplied by Tesla for its Berlin plant, which the body verified.

The SUV, Europe's best-selling car, scored 93% overall. That still leaves it behind the BYD Dolphin Surf, which gets 96%, helped notably by its more compact size.

Switzerland weighs an 80 km/h limit

Switzerland, meanwhile, is studying a temporary 80 km/h motorway limit in response to a serious fuel shortage in Europe. No decision has been taken. The measure aims to cut consumption of combustion-engine vehicles by 20 to 30%, but it would also apply to electric cars, which burn no fuel.

The idea highlights the contested choices Switzerland has made on the electric transition, at a time when electric vehicles are gaining ground in the country.
