Critical Linux TCP/IP Bug Allows Remote Code Execution
A critical flaw in the Linux kernel's TCP/IP stack allows remote code execution. Anthropic's Claude found the eleven-year-old bug, and updates are in the works.

A critical vulnerability has been uncovered in the TCP/IP stack of the Linux kernel. It allows remote code execution, meaning an attacker could in principle run their own code on an affected system over the network. Updates are currently being prepared.
The flaw is eleven years old. According to the report, it was found by Anthropic's AI model Claude, which makes the case a notable example of AI-assisted vulnerability research in widely used open-source infrastructure. It is also not the first time a serious bug has surfaced in this part of the kernel, which is why the new find is described as another critical hole in Linux networking code.
Why it matters
The TCP/IP stack handles a large share of network communication on Linux machines. That includes servers, cloud workloads, network appliances and embedded devices. A bug in this layer that can be triggered remotely is therefore especially serious, because it does not necessarily depend on a user taking any action. The fact that the flaw went unnoticed for more than a decade also shows how hard it is to audit even heavily reviewed kernel code.
What comes next
Fixes are in progress. Further technical details, such as exact affected kernel versions, were not available at the time of writing, so administrators should watch for security advisories from their Linux distribution and install kernel updates as soon as they are released. Because kernel patches typically require a reboot or live patching, teams running critical systems may want to plan maintenance windows in advance.
The discovery adds to the growing debate over the role of AI models in finding security flaws. If systems like Claude can surface long-hidden bugs in core components, defenders gain a powerful tool, but the same capabilities underline the need to ship patches quickly once such flaws become known.
